As I investigated my project further, it became apparent that simpler means were available for initial testing of code and design theory. A 8*8 LED matrix avoids having to wire up a large array of Leds and was much more appropriate at this stage of my project for prototyping a software solution.
Open CV which can be used in the Processing environment, was a valid solution enabling me to use a simple web cam as a motion sensor. The possibilities and scope for develop the project through using these methods are much greater. Firstly my project was a largely physically based prototype implementing the design through physical components. Using the camera allowed me to explore software solutions which were more flexible and dynamic, not limiting me like the physical based coponent design would, to a designated output. As you do with experimental project designs, I have drastically changed the tools I will use and would have done sooner, if I had discovered these software capabilities earlier during the preproduction phase. It is a simplier and more rewarding approach. Open CV is widely used in Robotics and with visual artists for the implementation of "Computer Vision", which is a very exciting area to be envolved in.
I have choosen the LED matrix serial interface RGB (serial no COM_00760).I have posted videos and photography of some programs in action and also the wiring.
My next stage will be to get my web cam. Isight might be best, or a ps3 eye which I can link to my mac with opensource software from sourceforge.net called "macam".
I am also investigating "Open framework" which is another software with more computer vision capabilities than Open CV alone. Initially I have found that I need to join apples developers team for £100  in order to use it so more research is needed to find out if There is an alternative.
